Best Time to Visit New Plymouth
New Plymouth is a rewarding destination at any time of year, but summer (December to February) is peak season for outdoor activities and beach visits. The Festival of Lights in Pukekura Park runs from late December through February and is one of the most spectacular free events in New Zealand. The WOMAD music festival, held at Bowl of Brooklands in Pukekura Park each March, brings world-class international music to New Plymouth and is one of the city’s most beloved annual events. Autumn and spring are excellent for hiking in Egmont National Park when track conditions are at their best. Day Trips from New Plymouth
New Plymouth’s position on the Taranaki “ring” means that some of the region’s best attractions are accessible on day trips from the city. Egmont National Park and the various walks on the mountain’s lower slopes are ideal half-day or full-day excursions. The Forgotten World Highway (State Highway 43) winds through dramatic, remote landscape to Taumarunui — one of New Zealand’s most memorable drives. The Taranaki coastline north and south of New Plymouth offers wild surf beaches, sea caves, and dramatic coastal scenery. Hamilton is about two hours north and Whanganui is about 1.5 hours south, both within easy day-trip range.
Getting Around
New Plymouth has local bus services, and the city centre and Coastal Walkway are easily explored on foot or by bicycle. A rental car is recommended for exploring the wider Taranaki region, including Egmont National Park, the Forgotten World Highway, and the region’s coastal attractions. Mount Taranaki is visible from the city on clear days and creates one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary urban backdrops — but cloud cover is frequent, so if you wake up to a clear morning, prioritise getting out to the mountain immediately. The Pouakai Circuit — a 2-3 day tramp around the mountain through stunning alpine and wetland terrain — offers the famous “Pouakai Tarn” reflection shot, one of New Zealand’s most photographed images. The Govett-Brewster gallery and Len Lye Centre offer free admission and are genuinely world-class — don’t skip them even if contemporary art isn’t usually your focus.
